Cobra Island is in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, with a small strip of inhabited coastline buffered from the utterly savage interior by a huge and mysterious wall -- the "Great Cobra Wall" -- seemingly built by some ancient and long-vanished civilisation. But now the dark forces of Nazi Germany are sending expeditions deep into the island, and the intelligence agencies of the Western democracies want to know why ...
Adventurers/Agents of Democracy

|
Arriving on Cobra Island on a freighter so as not to attract attention are an archaelogist from America and a biologist from the UK, and they soon make an inseparable team. Before long, they meet and join forces with a man of unknown origin, grown up feral in the darkest part of the jungles of Cobra Island, whose incredible strength, fieldcraft and knowledge of the interior make him an invaluable companion.
The freighter's captain and first mate become allies of this team when they discover the importance of the mission, and aid the adventurers in many encounters.

Tropical Nazis and their Co-Conspirators

|
Why are there Nazi troops on Cobra Island? It's well-known that the corrupt, oppressive local government has been paid off by the Nazis to permit this, but what are the Nazis looking for? Why do their transports keep moving off the docks with mysterious and apparently deadly cargo? And why have they retained the services of a rogue French paleontologist? What possible service could such a man provide the Nazis?

The Cult of the Cobra Dawn

|
When our heroes were investigating the presence of the Nazis on Cobra Island, one lead directed them to a mansion to the north of Ciudad C, on a huge estate bought several years ago by an American industrialist, Max Dane. Dane had accumulated countless millions in various industrial endeavors but still lacked the limitless power and control he craved. Always fascinated by the occult,
he now hired an army of researchers and archaeologists to seek a dark path to ultimate power. Before he went mad, one occult researcher apprised Dane of the demon Vorago, "an abomination dwelling in a terrifying dimension" who was always seeking entry into our world, promising dark glory to the man who brought him forward into our dimension. To do this,
the Idol of Vorago must be soaked in the blood of a virgin and then her body must be laid on a pentagram altar. Certain black magic words must then be uttered by someone versed in the dark arts upon the rising sun at the summer solstace, and if all of this occurs, it is said that Vorago would burst from the body of the sacrifice -- and take dominion of the world.
Legend had it that the Idol of Vorago was located somewhere on Cobra Island, spirited away there and hidden in the deepest jungle after a catastrohpic failed attempt to invoke the demon in the seventeenth century. Finding it would be a colossal undertaking, but Maxwell C. Dane was not a man to be denied, so he purchased an abandoned plantation
on the island, raised a force of cutthroats from amongst the dregs of the world, indoctrinated them in the ways of Vorago, and the Cult of the Cobra Dawn was born. Dane could at times be glimpsed in Ciudad C, toting a BAR and heavily guarded by sinister men in red robes, and by his enormous Doberman Pinscher, Gunter. Were the Nazis on Cobra Island to tap the power of this interdimensional horror, to usurp the Idol of Vorago from Dane? "We must investigate forthwith," announced Professor Edmund. Massachusetts Smith pushed his fedora forward on his head, and turned his gaze to the north ....

Neanderthals

|
Cobra Island is an astonishing place -- mostly vast, mysterious jungles beyond the Great Cobra Wall, but also containing various human settlements. Most notable of these is Ciudad Cobra, with a population of over 10,000, a bustling port city and decadent gambling haven. It would surely astonish the flappers and other casino denizens of "Ciudad C," as the city is sometimes called, to learn that,
only several kilometers inland, dwell savage tribes of ... APE MEN!
For so the rugged guerilla fighters of the Cobra Island Resistance Movement (CIRM) call these Neanderthals. Professor Edmund tried to explain to the CIRM jungle revolutionaries that these are not Ape Men, but a vanished race of humans, but the CIRM guerillas stick to their name, and fear the wrath of the "Ape Men."
Now that Feral Lord Whitecole has learned to speak English, he assures Massachusetts Smith (in his own halting way) that the Neanderthals are not evil, they are simply wild and savage brutes, and that they would be incorruptible by the Nazis.
So, the Nazis must be here for ... some other goal ....

The Man Eaters

|
The CIRM Revolutionaries on Cobra Island fear one thing above all others -- more than the government troops, more than the Nazis, and even more than the God King of the Jungle. They are in a terror over creatures they call the "Man Eaters." These creatures are cruel and vastly large, and storm through the jungles and forests of the
interior, pursuing smaller creatures, including men. Rifle bullets are no more than insect stings to them. Upon running down a man, they will bite him whole in their cavernous maws, and the shrieking man's arms and legs will tumble to the jungle floor as the rest of him is consumed.
Even worse, the Neanderthals sometimes team up with these creatures, or more precisely, the Neanderthals have learned to lure them into an attack on the foes of the Neanderthal tribe. The Neanderthals follow close behind, attacking dazed survivors. These onslaughts are said to be unstoppable.
Upon hearing the description of these monsters, Lord Whitecole, the feral hunter, nooded gravely and, for the first time in memory of Massachusetts Smith, seemed to show a hint of fear. Professor Edmund stated, " Approximately two million years ago, the Tyrannosaurus and other dinosaurs were at their peak.
Scientists call this the Jurassic period. Perhaps the Nazis are here to harness the awful power of these ancient beasts? Let us hope that is not the case."

Death From Above

Many are the terrors of the primordial jungle in the center of Cobra Island. Even when no danger is visible, another threat can be lurking in the skies above, ready to swoop ... and kill.
The Neanderthals fear these creatures, but their presence can be an early warning that the Man Eaters are nearby, for they often follow the maneaters and pick over the corpse leavings after the Man Eaters feed.

GOD KING OF THE JUNGLE

Separated temporarily from her love interest, the first mate of the freighter, the movie starlet is vulnerable in the primeval jungle of Cobra Island. And now, she is being hunted, by the most terrifying creatures in the deepest jungle on the island, the Man Eaters. Terrified, she screams ....
... and this summons her jungle protector, the God-King of the Jungle, and hated foe of the Man Eaters, who will not allow harm to come to the starlet as long as he still draws breath. But the Man Eaters likewise suffer no living thing to come between them and their prey.
